Qualcomm is making a stronger push toward AI-powered smartphones with two new premium mobile platforms designed to handle increasingly sophisticated AI workloads directly on the device.
Announced during the company’s Snapdragon Summit 2026, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 are aimed at making smartphones more capable of running personalized AI experiences without depending entirely on cloud-based processing.
AI That Understands More About the User
One of the most notable changes is Qualcomm’s focus on personalized, device-level AI.
The new platforms include sensing capabilities designed to process smaller AI models locally. Qualcomm says these capabilities can support functions such as identifying different speakers, creating personal notes, remembering user behavior and helping AI agents provide more relevant suggestions.

This approach could make smartphone assistants feel less like simple command-based tools and more like systems that understand context from everyday interactions.
The company also says the hardware can support voice-based AI agents that process both spoken input and spoken responses directly through the device.
Bigger AI Models, Running Locally
Qualcomm is also targeting more demanding AI workloads.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 includes a new accelerator designed to improve the efficiency of AI model execution. The Extreme edition takes the concept further by supporting a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally.
Mixture-of-experts systems do not necessarily activate every parameter for every request. Instead, they can use selected portions of the model depending on the task, making large AI systems more practical for local hardware.

The move highlights how smartphone processors are evolving beyond traditional CPU and GPU performance. AI acceleration is increasingly becoming a major part of what flagship mobile chips are designed to deliver.
Cameras Get an AI-Focused Upgrade
The new processors are not limited to AI assistants.
Qualcomm is also improving the camera capabilities of its latest platforms, including more detailed control over individual pixels, enhanced stabilization and better understanding of movement.

The Extreme model supports demanding recording formats including 8K at 60 frames per second and 4K at 240 frames per second, opening the door to advanced slow-motion and professional-style video applications. It also introduces support for Qualcomm’s Advanced Professional Video codec.
For smartphone manufacturers, these capabilities could help turn flagship phones into more capable content-creation devices.
Better Calls Through AI
Audio is another area receiving an AI treatment.
Both new Snapdragon platforms can use AI-based processing to improve voice quality and reduce unwanted background noise. Qualcomm is also introducing its Voice Bubble technology, designed to help isolate a user’s voice during calls.
That could be particularly useful in crowded offices, public spaces and other noisy environments where traditional noise cancellation can struggle.
Motorola Is Already On Board
Qualcomm’s announcement is already connected to new smartphone hardware. Motorola has announced the Motorola Signature 27, which will use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The phone is expected to become generally available later in 2026.
The broader significance is that these processors give manufacturers a platform for building AI capabilities directly into upcoming premium smartphones.
The Smartphone Is Becoming an AI Platform
Qualcomm’s latest announcement reflects a wider industry direction: AI is increasingly being designed as a core smartphone capability rather than an optional software feature.
The company has also been expanding its AI hardware strategy beyond phones, while continuing to position Snapdragon as a platform for intelligent computing across different device categories.
For consumers, the impact may eventually appear in everyday functions rather than benchmark numbers. Smarter assistants, personalized automation, better voice recognition, improved photography and more capable offline AI could become standard features of future flagship devices.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family therefore represents more than another processor upgrade. It signals Qualcomm’s effort to make the smartphone a more powerful home for local and personalized AI, with increasingly capable models operating closer to the user.
